10 Must-Dos during a job interview – For Candidates

Job interviews tend to cause much stress for people willing to take a shift in their careers.

What should I wear? Should I bring my resume and cover letter? What about getting a recommendation from my current employer?

Those are just some of the most common questions candidates have before a job interview.

This blog will help you clear all your questions and prepare you for the interview that could just land you a dream job! 

1. Do your homework about the company.

The most important thing you should do before coming to a job interview is doing your research. Read up about the company, its goals, mission, products, or services. And of course, the position you’re applying for.

30% of recruiters consider “blacklisting” candidates who apply to jobs they’re blatantly unqualified for.To avoid making such an impression, make sure you’ve read the job ad carefully, and come prepared.

2. Dress according to the position.

When choosing an outfit for your job interview, learning more about the company is key.

If you are applying for a corporate position, go for a formal look. If you want to work at a startup, a more laid-back outfit will do just fine.

A rule of thumb is avoiding anything that shows too much of your skin or makes you look unprofessional. If you have any doubts, drop a message to HR, asking what dress code they go for at their company.

3. Arrive on time.

Always try and arrive 10-15 minutes ahead to time. First impression makes a big difference. Plan your journey so you’re not late.

4. Don't stress out.

Interviews can be stressful. Especially if it’s the position or a company you’ve dreamt of working in. Manage your stress on the day of the interview. 

If it helps – take a day off from your current job so you’re not stressing out about leaving on time etc. Go for a morning walk, drink plenty of water. Eat well. Focus on your breathing. Meditate for 5 minutes. 

Do anything that calms your nerves and get ready.

5. Listen carefully, then talk.

One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is they blabber on for 10 to 15 minutes without answering the question. 

Pay attention to the interviewer. Understand the question. Ask to repeat if you’re not sure so when you talk, you actually end up answering the question.

6. Pay attention to your body language.

We end up doing unnecessary things when we’re stressed or nervous and lose sense of our body language. 

Therefore in an interview, pay attention to your body language, sitting position, tone of voice.

Sit up straight, speak at a moderate speed and use some hand gestures. 

7. Prepare open ended questions.

At the end of the interview, HR will ask if you have any questions? 

Use this opportunity to ask some open ended questions and learn more about the company or position.

8. Be curious and hungry to know more.

Whether it’s learning about your potential workplace or collogues or new projects, show genuine interest to learn more. 

Firstly, make sure you’re applying for the position and a company you really want to work for. Now that you’re there in an interview, it is your chance to show that you really want to work for them.

9. Do your best and relax.

Once the interview is completed, all you can do now is wait for someone to come back to you regarding next steps.
